Tolterodine 2 mg Tablets
What Tolterodine is used for:
- Tolterodine is a medicine that is used for the treatment of patients with symptoms of overactive bladder syndrome.
- Overactive bladder syndrome may cause signs like inability to control urination, having the urge to rush to the toilet with no previous warning and/or frequent urination.
Do not take Tolterodine:
- If you are allergic to Tolterodine, or any of the ingredients in this medicine. Tell your doctor about the allergy and what signs you had.
- If you cannot pass urine from the bladder.
- If you have severe ulcerative colitis (ulceration and inflammation of the colon).
- If you have an uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma (high pressure in the eyes with possible vision loss if the disease is not properly treated).
- If you have a toxic megacolon (acute dilatation of the colon).
- If you have myasthenia gravis (excessive weakness of the muscles).
Warnings and Precautions:
- Stop the medication right away and talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you develop allergic reactions such as shortness of breath, skin rash, swelling of the face or neck, decreased blood pressure and dizziness.
- Make sure that you tell your doctor about all your medical problems before you receive this medicine including if you have neuronal problems that may affect your bowel function, sexual function or blood pressure, difficulties in passing urine and/or a poor stream of urine, a gastrointestinal (stomach or bowel) disease that affects the digestion and passage of food passage, kidney or liver problems, or if you have a hiatal hernia (herniation of an abdominal organ).
- Talk to your doctor before starting this medicine if you ever experience a decrease in bowel movements or if you are severely constipated.
- Talk to your doctor before starting this medicine if you have a heart problem like a slow heart rate, an abnormal heart tracing (ECG), or if you have a history of heart diseases like myocardial ischemia (reduced blood flow to the heart), cardiomyopathy (weak heart muscle), arrhythmia (abnormal heart rhythm) and heart failure (inability of your heart muscle to pump blood properly).
- Talk to your doctor before starting this medicine if you have abnormally low blood levels of potassium, magnesium or calcium.
Possible side effects:
- Possible side effects include allergic reactions and signs of heart failure (uncommon), like difficulty breathing, chest pain, getting tired easily (even at rest) and swelling of the legs.
- Very common side effects include headache and dry mouth.
- Common side effects include bronchitis, chest pain, dizziness, drowsiness, increased weight, dry eyes, blurred vision, dry skin, tiredness, diarrhea, vertigo, indigestion, constipation, abdominal pain, bloating, palpitations, vomiting, painful or difficult urination, edema (e.g. in the ankles) and sensation of pins and needles in the fingers and toes.
- Uncommon side effects include nervousness, heart problems (e.g. heart failure, increased heart rate, irregular heartbeat), memory impairment and heartburn.
Other medicines and Tolterodine:
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medications including prescription medicines, over the counter medicines, herbals, vitamins and supplements.
- If you are taking some antibiotics (e.g. clarithromycin, erythromycin).
- If you are taking antifungals (e.g. itraconazole, ketoconazole).
- If you are taking medicines used to treat HIV.
- If you are taking medicines that can affect the passage of food (e.g. metoclopramide and cisapride)
- If you are taking medicines used to treat irregular heart rhythms (e.g. quinidine, procainamide, amiodarone, sotalol).
- If you are taking medicines that act similarly to Tolterodine (antimuscarinics). Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure if your medicine is one of them.
- If you are taking medicines that act oppositely to Tolterodine (cholinergic medicines). Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure if your medicine is one of them.
How to take Tolterodine:
- The usual recommended dose is one 2 mg tablet orally twice daily.
- If you have kidney/liver problems or if you are experiencing side effects from the medicine, your doctor may recommend that you take one 1 mg tablet orally twice daily.
- Tolterodine is not recommended for children.
- Take your medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
- Your doctor will determine the dose that you need to take.
- Take tablets before, during or after food.
- This medicine is intended for oral use only.
- Swallow the tablet whole.
- The benefit of the treatment with this medicine must be evaluated after 2 to 3 months.
- Your doctor will determine for how long you will be taking this medicine.
