You are prescribed alendronic acid because you either have or at risk of developing osteoporosis
Do not take Alendronic Acid Tablets if you :
Are allergic to alendronic acid, the active ingredient, or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
Have certain disorders of the esophagus (sometimes called the gullet and is the tube that connects your mouth with your stomach) such as narrowing or difficulty swallowing
Cannot stand or sit upright for at least 30 minutes
Your doctor has told you that you have low blood calcium
Warnings and precautions :
It is important to tell your doctor before taking Alendronic Acid Tablets if
You suffer from kidney problems
You have any swallowing or digestive problems
You doctor has told you that you have Barrett's esophagus
You have cancer
You are taking corticosteroids
You are or have been a smoker
Possible side effects :
Heartburn : difficulty swallowing;
Pain upon swallowing : ulceration of the gullet which can cause chest pain, heartburn, difficulty or pain upon swallowing.
Other medicines and Alendronic acid Tablets :
It is likely that calcium supplements, antacids, and some oral medicines will interfere with the absorption of Alendronic acid tablets if taken at the same time.
Certain medicines for rheumatism or long-term pain called NSAIDs (e.g. acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) or ibuprofen) might cause digestive problems.
How to take Alendronic Acid Tablets :
Recommended Dose :
For the treatment of osteoporosis in men or post-menopausal women the recommended dose is 10 mg once a day.
For the treatment prevention of steroid induced osteoporosis in post-menopausal women not receiving hormone replacement therapy (HRT) with an estrogen the recommended dose is 10 mg once a day.
How to store Alendronic Acid Tablets :
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not use alendronic acid tablets after the expiry date, which is stated on the carton and blister after ‘EXP’.
The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
This medicinal product does not require any special storage conditions
Do not throw any medicines via wastewater or household waste.
Dosage form and route of administration of Alendronic acid once weekly 70 mg tablets should be prescribed according to therapeutic indication and disease severity of each individual patient.
