Tetracycline 1% Eye ointment  

What is Tetracycline used for:
  • Tetracycline is used for the treatment of the following indications:
  • Blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids)
  • Conjunctivitis (inflammation of the ocular surface)
  • Keratitis (inflammation of the cornea)
  • Dacryocystitis (inflammation of the tear sac)
  • Sty
  • Trachoma (a serious infectious eye disease)
  • Prevention of inflammation in eye surgery (used before and after eye surgery)
  • Prevention of neonatal conjunctivitis (a type of bacterial infection of the ocular surface in neonates).
Do not use Tetracycline: 
  • If you are allergic to Tetracycline, or other tetracycline antibiotics or any of the ingredients in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor about the allergy and what signs you had.
Warnings and Precautions:
  • Stop using the medicine and talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you develop allergic reactions such as shortness of breath, skin rash, swelling of the face or neck, decreased blood pressure and dizziness. 
  • Stop using the medicine and talk to your doctor if you experience reddening of the eyes, or itching/swelling of the eyelids. 
  • This medicine may cause increased sensitivity to sunlight. Avoid intensive sun exposure when using this medicine.
  • Do not use this medicine for more than recommended by your healthcare provider.
  • Prolonged use of this medicine may cause superinfections with bacteria or fungi that are not susceptible to this medicine. 
  • The simultaneous use of this medicine with corticosteroids for eye use (e.g. dexamethasone, prednisolone or hydrocortisone) is not recommended, due to unfavorable symptoms that may be masked. 
  • Do not wear contact lenses if you have an eye infection.
Possible side effects:
  • Possible side effects include allergic reactions, itching, eye stinging or burning, blurred vision, swelling of the eyelid, itching in the eye or eyelid, lacrimation (excessive tear discharge), reddening of the conjunctiva, eye pain and photodermatitis (increased sensitivity to UV rays and sunlight).
Other medicines and Tetracycline: 
  • Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medications including eye drops. 
  • If you are using other antibiotic eye drops (aminoglycosides, penicillin, cephalosporins). 
  • If you are using corticosteroids (dexamethasone, prednisolone or hydrocortisone) for eye use. 
How to apply Tetracycline:
  • Adults and children
  • Depending on the severity of your case, a strip of the eye ointment (1 – 1.5 cm length) is inserted into the fold of the lower eyelid 3 to 4 times daily.
  • This medicine may be inserted more frequently (up to 6 times daily) in more severe cases. 
  • Prevention of neonatal conjunctivitis
  • A strip of the eye ointment (length of 0.5 – 1 cm) is inserted into the conjunctival folds of the lower eyelids of both eyes of the newborn baby within 1 hour after delivery.
  • Your healthcare provider should make sure to open a new tube for each newborn baby.
How To Use:
  • Use this medicine exactly as recommended by your doctor. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. 
  • The usual duration of treatment is 5 to 7 days. You should continue using the medicine for 2 to 3 days after symptoms relief. 
  • If you are using this medicine for more severe eye infections and acute or chronic trachoma, your doctor may recommend continuing the medicine for 1 to 2 months and may combine this treatment with oral antibiotic therapy.
  • If you are using other eye medicines, make sure to space your eye drops by at least 10 minutes and use the ointment last. 
  • Avoid contact of the eye ointment tip with your eye or other surfaces to prevent bacterial contamination. 
  • Wash your hands before you apply the ointment.
  • Talk to your doctor before you continue the treatment if you think your ointment may be contaminated. 
  • Make sure that the cap and the tube is not broken before you use the ointment.
  • Wash your hands and open the tube by unscrewing the cap.
  • Hold the ointment tube between your index finger and thumb, as close as possible to your eyelid.
  • Tilt your head slightly forward and pull the lower eyelid away from your eye to form a pouch between the eyelid and the eye.
  • Squeeze carefully a strip of the ointment (length of about 1-1.5 cm), the eye ointment strip will fall just into place.
  • Afterwards, make sure to close gently your eyelid for 1 to 2 minutes and then rotate your eyeball in all directions, to enhance the spread of the medicine on the entire eye surface.
  • Remove the excessive amount of the medicine from the eyelid or eyelashes with a clean tissue. Using another clean tissue, make sure to wipe the tip of the ointment tube and then close it tightly with the cap. Repeat all steps for the other eye if necessary.
  • This ointment is intended for eye use only. 
How to store Tetracycline: 
  • Keep out of the reach of children and pets.
  • Do not store above 25°C. Do not freeze.
  • Discard the ointment tube 28 days after opening it. 
  • Do not use beyond the expiry date mentioned on the box. 
  • Keep away from light. 
  • Do not dispose in the wastewater or household waste.
  • Ask your pharmacist how to dispose medicines you no longer use.
  • Do not use this medicine if you see any change in the consistency or appearance of the eye ointment.
