Product Description:

- Asacol contains the active substance mesalazine, which is an anti-inflammatory drug used in the treatment of rectal inflammation ( ulcerative proctitis ).
- Mesalazine inhibits local inflammation (inflammation) in the intestine.
How To Use:
- Always use this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. Contact a doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.
The recommended dose is:
- Adults and elderly people
- The normal dose is 500 mg 2 times a day, the dose can be increased to 3 times a day in more difficult cases.
Use of Asacol in children and adolescents:
- There is little experience and only limited documentation for the effect on children.
- The doctor's dosage instructions must always be followed .
Instructions for use:
- Empty the bowel before inserting the suppository.
- Wash your hands.
- Remove the plastic sleeve around the suppository and take out the suppository.
- Lie on your side and pull your knees up towards your chest.
- Insert the suppository as far as possible with the flat end first into the rectal opening with the index or middle finger.
- Stretch your legs and lie still for a few minutes (if possible).
- If you feel like you have to push the suppository out, try to resist this feeling by lying still and pinching your bottom.
- It is important that you keep the suppository in the rectum so that it melts and the medicine can be absorbed by the body.
- The suppository should be kept in the rectum for as long as possible to ensure optimal effect.
- If the suppository comes out before 10 minutes have passed, you should insert a new one into the rectum .
- Wash your hands.
If you take too much Asacol:
- Contact a doctor, hospital or the Poisons Information Center if you have taken too much medicine or if a child has taken medicine by accident.
- For other questions about the medicine, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
If you have swallowed an Asacol 500 mg suppository by mistake :
- Drink plenty of water and inform your doctor or the nearest emergency room immediately.
- Take the pack of suppositories with you.
If you have forgotten to take Asacol:
- You must not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.
- If one or more doses have been forgotten, the next dose should be taken at the usual time.
If you stop treatment with Asacol:
- You must not stop treatment with Asacol without consulting your doctor first, even if you feel better.
- Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions about the use of this medicine.
Warnings And Precautions:
Talk to your doctor before taking Asacol if you have a medical condition or illnesses, this is especially true if you have:
- problems with the lungs, e.g. asthma .
- have previously shown an allergy to sulfasalazine.
- had an allergic reaction in the heart such as an inflammation of the heart muscle or pericardium. If you have previously had allergic reactions in the heart suspected to be caused by mesalazine, you must not start treatment with Asacol again.
- Asacol can be taken with caution if you have previously had an allergic reaction in the heart that was not caused by mesalazine.
- if you have ever had a severe rash or peeling of the skin, blisters and/or mouth sores after using mesalazine.
- Serious skin reactions have been reported in connection with treatment with mesalazine, including drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms ( DRESS ), Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN).
- Stop taking mesalazine and consult a doctor immediately if you develop any of the symptoms associated with severe skin reactions .
- Use caution when using Asacol if you have ulcers in your stomach or intestines.
